A Sonnet to Her Excellency, On her Birthday

To our Maria these gifts this day
With many wishes bold that joy they bring:
a rosy dawn to drive the dark away
And with its glow remind us of the spring.

The sun in splendor shall the heights then climb
And give you warmth like goodly friends who care,
The dusk to kiss your cheek with twilight rhyme
And speak in colored praise the love we share,

The night as cloak to softly compass you
And keep you close and safe from any harm,
The guiding light of stars with diamond hue
To inspiration give with heav'nly charm.

May every day these wonders touch you true,
Our greatest gift the joy we share with you.
